September is fashion’s most confusing month.
At 8 a.m., you’re reaching for a sweater. By 2 p.m., you’re wondering why you dressed for a ski chalet. The sandals suddenly feel a little optimistic, the heavy boots feel completely unhinged, and somehow your closet is full of clothes while you still have absolutely nothing to wear.
Welcome to seasonal-change dressing.
The trick isn’t to perform a ceremonial burning of your summer wardrobe the second Labour Day passes. September dressing works best when you shift the balance — keeping the pieces that still make sense, bringing fall textures and layers into the mix, and quietly retiring anything that screams July patio.
Here’s how we’re doing it.
KEEP: Your Favourite Tees & Lightweight Tops
Do not pack away every short sleeve you own.
A great tee, mesh top, lightweight knit or short-sleeve sweater is actually one of September’s hardest-working pieces because it gives you options. Wear it alone when the afternoon decides it’s still summer, then add a jacket, cardigan or vest when the temperature drops.
This is also the month when texture starts doing the heavy lifting.
Instead of reaching automatically for a basic cotton tee, try a jacquard knit, crochet top, mesh layer or something with a little embellishment. You still get the lightweight feel you need now, but the outfit suddenly looks a whole lot more fall.
Translation: same amount of effort. Much better outfit.
ADD: Statement Denim
If there were ever a month to let your jeans have a personality, September is it.
Statement denim is one of our favourite ways to transition because it instantly makes an outfit feel more substantial without requiring heavy layers.
Think:
ruffled hems
barrel legs
wide-leg silhouettes
embroidery
patchwork
unexpected washes
embellished details
Pair them with a lightweight sweater now, then add jackets and boots as the season progresses.
And yes, your trusty basic jeans can stay. We’re not staging an intervention.
We’re simply suggesting that occasionally your pants deserve to be the interesting one in the relationship.
KEEP — WITH CONDITIONS: Summer Dresses
Some summer dresses absolutely deserve another few weeks.
The key is changing the supporting cast.
That floaty dress you wore with sandals in July?
Try it now with a denim jacket, cardigan, cropped faux leather jacket or chunky knit. Swap the beachy accessories for something richer and suddenly it feels completely different.
A chiffon or printed dress can look especially good during this in-between season because you get movement and colour without a lot of bulk.
The goal isn’t to make the dress look “summery but cold.”
It’s to make it look like you planned this.
ADD: The Lightweight Sweater
September belongs to the sweater that isn’t trying to roast you alive.
Short sleeves. Open knits. Lightweight jacquards. Crochet. Looser silhouettes. Fine-gauge knits.
These are the pieces you can actually wear now without instantly regretting every decision you’ve made since breakfast.
We especially love pairing lightweight sweaters with statement denim because the formula is almost embarrassingly easy:
interesting sweater + great jeans + good shoes = done.
Add jewellery if you’re feeling ambitious.
Take the win.
ADD: Texture. Lots of It.
Fall fashion starts getting really good when texture enters the chat.
Velour. Corduroy. Faux fur. Crochet. Vegan leather. Tweed. Mesh. Chunky knits.
September is the perfect time to start mixing these richer fabrics into outfits without going full winter.
Try a faux leather jacket over a lightweight top.
Pair corduroy with a simple knit.
Wear crochet with denim.
Throw a fuzzy or textured sweater over your favourite jeans.
Texture makes even a simple outfit look considered — which is especially helpful on mornings when your actual thought process was:
shirt, pants, caffeine, go.
KEEP: Colour
Fall does not mean everyone needs to report immediately for duty in beige.
We love rich chocolate, olive and denim as much as the next person, but this season we’re also hanging onto lavender, fuchsia, red, soft pink and unexpected colour combinations.
In fact, colourful fall clothes are sometimes even better because they pop against all those deeper autumn shades.
A lavender sweater with dark denim.
A colourful striped knit with brown or cream.
A bright top under a black jacket.
Fall can be cozy without becoming chromatically depressed.
ADD: The Third Piece
This is where September outfits really start coming together.
If your outfit feels vaguely unfinished, there’s a good chance it needs a third piece.
A jacket.
A vest.
A cardigan.
An open knit.
A lightweight layer.
It’s the easiest styling trick in the book because it turns “I put on clothes” into “Oh, look at her having an outfit.”
And unlike January layering, September layering can still be light enough that you retain the use of your arms.
Bonus.
QUIETLY RETIRE: The Extremely Summer Stuff
We said quietly.
Nobody needs to make this emotional.
But there comes a moment when certain pieces have given all they have to give.
The ultra-beachy sundress.
The tropical print that practically comes with a piña colada.
The flip-flops that have seen things.
The tiny summer layer that only works when the forecast contains absolutely no adversity.
Thank them for their service.
Move on.
This is also an excellent time to look through your summer wardrobe and ask yourself what you genuinely loved wearing — and what spent three straight months on a hanger waiting to become the person you apparently thought you were when you bought it.
That information is useful.
THE SEPTEMBER FORMULA
If getting dressed still feels unnecessarily complicated, steal one of these:
Statement jeans + short-sleeve knit + loafers or sneakers
Summer dress + cropped jacket + closed-toe shoe
Wide-leg denim + mesh layering top + vest
Barrel jeans + lightweight sweater + sneakers
Floral or printed pants + solid crochet top + layered jewellery
Simple top + standout jacket + great denim
These outfits work now and keep working as temperatures drop. You simply add or swap layers instead of reinventing the entire outfit every three weeks.
AND THIS IS THE FUN PART…
September is when getting dressed starts feeling exciting again.
You don’t need five layers yet.
You’re not trying to wedge a parka over an outfit you actually liked.
You can wear fabulous jeans, interesting sweaters, beautiful textures, statement jackets and actual shoes without worrying about frostbite.
So no, you do not need to completely overhaul your wardrobe because the calendar changed.
You just need a few pieces that make everything you already own feel interesting again.
And perhaps one sweater you absolutely did not need but will mysteriously wear four times next week.
We fully support this behaviour.
