Jen’s Gift Wrapping Confessional: My Secret Holiday Obsession

Jen’s Gift Wrapping Confessional: My Secret Holiday Obsession

I’m about to share something you probably don’t know about me…and honestly, it’s a little ridiculous.

I care about gift wrap almost as much as the gift itself. Like—will absolutely spend more time selecting ribbon, paper, and toppers than the gift itself kind of care. And I take deep, personal pride in presenting a package that gets an ooh before it even gets opened.

You may already be drawing on similarities here — I bring this same energy to selecting the styles Creative Muse carries. It’s not about the attention a style will get from strangers — but rather how you’ll feel when you put it on. (Being admired by others is just an added bonus 🥰).

Here are my go-to wrapping tricks for your holiday gifts that’ll truly show the important people in your life how much they mean to you.

(And let’s be honest; we’d all love to make our holiday decor pop like one of those feature homes from the holiday issue of HGTV Magazine). 😆

1. Glue Dots: The Silent Hero of Immaculate Gift Wrap

Tape? I barely know her.

Glue dots are the secret weapon of polished wrapping — especially when you’re using high-glitter or textured papers that basically laugh at regular tape.

Why I obsess over them:

  • They disappear. Zero shiny edges ruining your vibe.
  • They cling to glittered paper like a dream.
  • They give every fold sharp, clean structure — almost like tailoring a box.

Stick one inside each fold, clap the seams together, and voilà: wrapping so crisp it practically flexes.

2. Ribbon Layering: The Couture Take on Gift Wrap

Most people slap on a ribbon and call it a day. Cute… but we’re here for elevated.

Try layering two or three ribbons in different textures and widths — satin, velvet, metallic cord, whatever feels chic. It’s basically the accessory stack of holiday gifting.

Pro tip:
Tie the thinnest ribbon last for a bow that looks intentional, not chaotic.

3. The Gift-Topper Glow-Up

Plastic bows had their moment… in 1998.

Upgrade your gifts with toppers that feel special:

  • Mini ornaments
  • Faux florals
  • Eucalyptus sprigs
  • Feathers
  • Charms or decorative clips
  • A wax seal pressed right onto the knot (the drama is delicious)

These tiny touches make your gift look like it went to finishing school.

4. The “Wrapped Twice” Technique

My favourite trick when you want a luxe look without using your whole roll of expensive wrap.

Wrap the gift in a solid base, then wrap a narrower band of patterned paper around the middle like a sash. It gives you that designer mixed-print vibe while using only a fraction of your fancy paper.

Fashion logic — but make it festive.

5. Corner Construction: The Make-or-Break Moment

Sloppy corners can undo even the prettiest wrap job. Crisp corners? Instant luxury.

Here’s the move:

  • Pull the paper tight like you’re tucking it into bed
  • Crease every fold with your fingernail
  • Use a glue dot to pinch the triangle into a clean diagonal seam

Boom. Perfection without pretension.

6. Luxe Gift Tags (Because Names Deserve Style Too)

Most tags feel like an afterthought — but a beautiful tag elevates the whole package.

Try:

  • Thick cardstock
  • Metallic gel pens
  • A ribbon-tied tag instead of taped
  • Vertical lettering for a chic, editorial look

It feels thoughtful without trying too hard.

7. Make Your Gifts Part of Your Holiday Décor

Choose 2–3 colours for your wrapping palette, and suddenly your gifts look curated instead of chaotic.

Your presents become part of your holiday decorating — little pops of beauty under the tree until it’s time for the reveal. It makes the whole space feel intentional and special.

8. The Secret to Luxe Wrapping: Consistency

The trick isn’t expensive supplies — it’s cohesion.

Same general palette. Similar ribbons. A tag style that feels uniform. Like building a wardrobe, consistency creates that elevated, effortless luxury.

Let Your Gifts Feel as Thoughtful on the Outside as What’s Inside

Whether you’re gifting a Creative Muse stunner or something sentimental and sweet, the wrapping can be its own tiny moment of joy. Think of it as the warm-up before the real magic happens.

And if your gift gets an ooh or an aah before they even untie the bow?
Well… mission accomplished.
